Nexus 7 LTE Review (Verizon Wireless)

The Nexus 7 remains one of the best tablets on the market and the
Nexus 7 LTE on Verizon Wireless combines always on connectivity with
the Nexus 7 review.
Google makes sure the Nexus 7 is running the latest version of Android
and Verizon delivers access to the fastest and largest LTE network in
the U.S for a combination that works really well.

For users coming from the first Nexus 7, the Nexus 7 (2013) that
Verizon is selling is step up in design and in the display. Users will
get a nice looking 1080P HD display and a thinner soft-touch design
that feels like a major improvement from the first model.

The Nexus 7 LTE on Verizon Wireless is priced nice and delivers access
to the large and fast Verizon LTE network.

Verizon sells about a dozen tablets including the iPad mini Retina,
which is another thin tablet with a nice looking display that is still
pocketable. For users comparing the iPad mini and the Nexus 7, there
are distinct advantages for each device, but they are both among the
best tablets Verizon sells.

Nexus 7 LTE Connectivity & Performance:

The Nexus 7 LTE allows us to connect anywhere without looking for a
coffee shop or draining smartphone battery life by using a mobile
hotspot. In areas with good coverage the Nexus 7 achieves impressive
LTE Speeds of 20Mbps down and 7.84Mbps up. This is fast enough to
stream HD movies and to download large files, though users can easily
burn through limited data plans.
In good coverage expect amazing speeds.
While testing the Nexus 7 at the office in a poor coverage area the
speeds dipped to 3G levels, but users are likely to connect to WiFi in
these locations. Because LTE speeds and coverage vary greatly it is a
good idea to see how Verizon coverage is in the places you plan to use
the Nexus 7 before picking a carrier.
The SIM card slot is the only exterior difference.
Inside the Nexus 7 LTE is equipped with the same 1.5 Ghz quad-core
processor and 2GB of as the WiFi only model. This is not the newest
processor, but it is powerful enough to deliver a snappy user
experience with quick app switching and loading. When it comes to
playing games users can still enjoy nice looking graphics on top
Android games.
Two speakers on the rear edges are part of the new design, and they
deliver better sounding audio than the original Nexus, but still send
the audio away form the user. Thanks to a new piece of software users
can enjoy improved sound and a virtual surround sound experience that
is not going to beat a home theater, but a nice touch for a small
tablet.

Nexus 7 LTE Battery Life:

The Nexus 7 LTE battery life is good, though lower than the claimed 9
hours in our testing.

The Nexus 7 LTE battery life is listed at 9 hours of active use like
the WiFi only model.

This is a little generous for use on LTE, but we still enjoyed 7-8
hours of user on the Nexus 7 in a single charge. The Nexus 7 LTE is
much better than the old Nexus at staying charged when in standbye
mode, but not as good as the iPad mini Retina. If we leave both
tablets untouched on a stand for a week, the iPad mini will still be
running while the Nexus 7 is out of juice. The Nexus 7 LTE also
includes Qi wireless charging for easier charging without plugging in
a cable.

Nexus 7 LTE Cameras:

Users can take photos and videos with the Nexus 7 LTE cameras and can
use Google Hangouts and Skype to video chat with friends and family.
The cameras are nice in a pinch, but won't replace a smartphone or a
point and shoot for taking photos of someone. The Verizon Nexus 7 LTE
ships with Android 4.4.2, the latest version of Android and thanks to
changes to Android apps since our original Nexus 7 (2013) review apps
like HBO Go and others now work on the Nexus 7.

India's top 10 lawyers

Drawing up any kind of list is fraught with danger, especially a list
of the country's ten top lawyers! We will almost certainly be accused
of acts of omission and commission. On our part, we've tried to be as
thorough as possible — asking senior and junior lawyers and retired
judges for their opinion; examining the track record of short-listed
candidates; comparing their knowledge, acumen and court craft with
that of others. How good are they at retrieving seemingly impossible
situations? Can they persuade a judge to appreciate a point of view
that is diametrically opposite his initial understanding? What role
have they played in the seminal cases of our time? How have they
shaped the opinion of government, the judiciary, the public? In our
final list, we left out those who currently hold positions in
government, such as attorney general Goolam Vahanvati and solicitor
general Gopal Subramaniam. We also didn't consider Kapil Sibal and
Arun Jaitley, because as HRD minister and leader of the Opposition in
the Rajya Sabha, respectively, they don't practise anymore. In the
end, we based our judgement primarily on what we saw and heard, first
hand, in the courts...

China to become largest net oil importer before year-end

Energy-hungry China is expected to overtake the US to become the
world's largest net oil importer before the endof this year, according
to a report.
The report, quoting figures from the US Energy
InformationAdministration (EIA), said that"the US is still the largest
importer of oil, but not for much longer. While its net oil imports
are quickly falling, those of China, the world's second largest oil
consumer, are quickly rising."
Asian demand for Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) energy products will
remain robust as the regional industrial expansion continuesin spite
of the weak economic background, the report said.
South Korea is an important economic partner to the Gulf, acertain
level of competition exists among GCC countries to increase their
share of exports, though, currently Saudi Arabia leads exports more
than the rest of the Gulf to South Korea.
According to the report, China is not the only country headingthat
direction: India and newly industrialised economies like South Korea
and Taiwan are also quickly catching up.
Just under half of the world's top ten net oil importers come from
emerging Asia, it said, revealing that South Korea is the 6th largest
net oil importer.
Korea's energy consumption levels have increased over time and, given
that its production capacity is relatively low and rigid, its energy
imports have been rising, said the report.
According to the report, the GCC exports nearly twice as much to
emerging Asia than it does to the G3 nations comprising Colombia,
Mexico, and Venezuela.
Less developed Asian economies, such as Vietnam and Cambodia, are also
increasing their demand for the Gulf's energy products, as they
develop their industrial sectors, while the G3 is reducing its imports
from the GCC, as their industries stall and as they become more energy
self-sufficient.
Among the GCC countries, Saudi Arabia is the largest exporter to South
Korea and fifth at the global level. Saudi shipped $ 37.5 billion
worth of goods in the 12 months to July2013, followed by Qatar with$
26 billion, Kuwait with $ 18.4 billion and the UAE with $ 16.2
billion. Kuwait became South Korea's third largest exporter from the
GCC in 2011.
GCC comprises six gulf nationsnamely United Arab Emirates, Bahrain,
Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait.

Rupee breaches 68/dollar again

The rupee slid a little closer on Tuesday to a record low struck
against the dollar last week, as share markets weakened and investors
remained doubtful whether the government would act decisively to
restore confidence in the economy.
With crude oil prices rising dueto fears about a potential US military
strike on Syria, economists have called for an increase in subsidised
fuel prices to help address concerns over a record high current
account deficit and a fiscal deficit that is among the highest of all
the major emerging market economies.
Markets are keenly waiting to see how former International Monetary
Fund economist Raghuram Rajan will handle thedefence of the rupee once
he takes over as governor of theReserve Bank of India on Thursday,
having previously beeen an advisor to the finance ministry.
As elsewhere, traders were also cautiously waiting for US jobs data
due out on Friday that could effect expectations about when the
Federal Reserve will start tapering its monetary stimulus. The
prospect of less easy money from the United States has caused a exodus
from many emerging markets over the past few months, but India
hasfared worse than most because of its precarious deficits.
The RBI's rupee defence has so far rested largely on draining money
markets, but the rupee has still lost over 19.5% against the dollar
since the slide began in early May, and higher short term interest
rates have raised borrowing costs for struggling corporates at time
when the economy's slowdown has become more acute.
The partially convertible rupeebreached 68 per dollar in afternoon
trade on Tuesday, weakening from its close of 66.00/01 on Monday, and
not far from the record low of 68.85 hit on August 28.
The rupee was impacted by gains in the dollar on international markets
and falling domestic shares.
The broader Nifty fell more than 2% on Tuesday on profit-taking,
snapping a three-session winning streak to Monday when it ended at a
2-1/2 week high.
Technicals suggest the rupee could fall further after a periodof
relative range-bound trading since striking the record low last week.
Offshore traders see the rupee staying near the record low with
one-month contracts for non-deliverable forwards trading at 68.30.
India is suffering from a dearthof investment, and the measures taken
by the government so far have failedto convince investors to put more
money into an economy, which is growing at a dangerously slow pace
given India's demographics.
Subsidies
With a national election due byMay, there are doubts whetherPrime
Minister Manmohan Singh's minority government would be ready to take
unpopular steps like raising subsidised fuel prices. Earlier this
week, lawmakers derided a proposal from Oil Minister Veerappa Moily to
close petrol pumps at nights.
India has unveiled measures to curb gold imports and announced gradual
diesel pricehikes, but economists say more are needed.
"Small hikes in fuel are not going to make up for the losses of oil
companies. The government will have to raise prices to send a clear
signal toinvestors, because if they do not meet the fiscal deficit
target, it will be negative for the economy," said Rupa Rege Nitsure,
chief economist at Bank of Baroda.
Data released on Friday showed the economy had grown by a worse than
expected 4.4% in the April-June quarter, adding to fears that growth
this fiscal year willcome in below the decade low growth of 5.0%
notched in the fiscal year that ended in March.
Investors worry the government is more focused on expensive, populist
measures that will make it hardfor India to meet its target of
bringing the fiscal deficit down to 4.8% of gross domestic product
this fiscal year.
On Monday, the upper house of parliament approved a scheme, that will
cost an estimated $20 billion, to provide subsidised grains to the
poor.
"The government is trying to rationalise subsidies on one front, but
has also approved the food security bill simultaneously, raising
concerns over whether the government is really committedto meeting its
fiscal deficit target," Nitsure said.

Microsoft to acquire Nokia's handset business for $7.2bn

Reuters
Finland's Nokia, once the undisputed leader in mobile phones, has been
struggling to respond to the challenge from smartphone makers such as
Apple and Samsung.

HELSINKI:
Microsoft Corp onTuesday said it would buy Nokia's mobile phone
business for 5.44 billion euros, and the Finnish firmsaid its CEO,
Stephen Elop, would join Microsoft when the transaction closed.
Finland's Nokia, once the undisputed leader in mobilephones, has been
struggling to respond to the challenge from smartphone makers such as
Apple and Samsung.
Analysts say Elop's bold bet in 2011 to adopt Microsoft's untested
Windows Phone software has yet to pay off.
The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of2014 and is
subject to approval by Nokia's shareholders and regulatory approvals.
Nokia partnered in 2011 with Microsoft and uses Microsoft's Windows
software to run its mobile phones.
"It's a bold step into the future - a win-win for employees,
shareholders and consumers of both companies," Microsoft's outgoing
CEO, Steve Ballmer, said in a statement.
"Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft's share
and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for
both Microsoft and our partners across our entirefamily of devices and
services."
Nokia said in a statement itexpected that Elop, along with senior
executives Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and ChrisWeber,
would transfer to Microsoft when the deal was concluded. It did not
say what roles they would take at Microsoft.
Nokia board chairman RistoSiilasmaa would take over CEO duties while
the Finnish firm looked for a new CEO, it said.
Elop, a Canadian hired by Nokia in 2010 from Microsoft, has been one
ofthe favourites to take over as Microsoft chief when Ballmer steps
down.

Way forward: A 'kill switch' could soon be installed in Samsung mobile phones and tablets which would allowthe devices to be disabled if they are stolen, it has emerged

A 'kill switch' could soon be installed in Samsung mobile phones and tablets which would allow the devices to be disabled if they are stolen. The new feature would allow the phone manufacturer to disable a stolen device even if a thief had tampered with the machine. It comes afterApple announced last month that its smartphones are to be installed with a similar switch. The authorities in South Korea- which are struggling to copewith an increase in gadget thefts - have asked the country's major technology makes - including Samsung - to begin installing the feature. Despite users currently being able to lock their screens to prevent strangers from gaining access to devices, thieves can work around this. They often hack into mobile phones to remove the barriers or instead replace SIM cards A kill switch would allow devices to be disabled by phone operators and manufacturers even if thieveshad taken this action. Apple announced last month that the capability will be added as part of the latest iOS update due out in the autumn. And the Mayor of London BorisJohnson is among politicians pushing all phone manufacturers to follow suit and do more to tackle phone theft. There were more than 100,000 'thefts from person' in the UK last year - an 8 per cent increase on 2011. Last month, pop singer Katie Melua had her iPhone 5 rippedfrom her by muggers as she walked from her Notting Hill studios.

Kill Switch': As part of anupdate to the operating system and the 'Find My Phone' application, iPhone users will be able to deactivate their devices online

Boris Johnson has written to the heads of Apple, Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, HTC, Microsoft, Blackberry and Sony demanding action, according to the Financial Times. His officials met with their counterparts in New York recently to share ideas on how to tackle the issue. The Apple update announced last month will allow users to deactivate their stolen smartphone online through an activation lock. Even if the owner's SIM card is removed, a thief can't erase the phone'sdata without a username and password.

Demands: Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, is among politicians pushing all phone manufacturers to tackle phone theft

An Apple ID and password are also required to turn off the new 'Find My Phone' application--which tracks a stolen or lost phone's GPS location. A custom message, such as 'This iPhone is lost. Please callme' will be continuously displayed even if thieves manage to erase the phone. 'We think this is going to be a really powerful theft deterrent,' Apple's senior vicepresident of software engineering Craig Federighi said at the developer's conference . Police warn that criminals wantmobile phones, iPads and other electronic devices to sell on the black market overseas, where handsets can be sold on for twice their value in the UK. And they say the public are leaving themselves vulnerable to attack by texting or using the internet while walking along, often withearphones in, oblivious to what is going on around them. The Office for National Statistics said the number of personal thefts increased by eight per cent last year. In theyear to December 2012 police recorded 107,471 such offences up from 99,396 a year earlier. The true total is likely to be much higher as many people do not report incidents to the police. An ONS spokesman said: ‘This represents a speeding-up of the recent increases seen for this offence. ‘Anecdotal evidence suggests that this may be in part drivenby theft of smartphones including the phenomena of bike riders stealing phones from people’s hands.’

Micromax aims for topspot among smartphones by Q3

NEW DELHI: Domestic handset maker Micromax said it aims to become the number one player in India's smartphone category by Diwali on the back of excellent demand for its Canvas series. "As per the IDC figures for Q2, we are at number two with 22 per cent market share and given the growth we are seeing in the phablet category (Canvas series), we are aiming to be the top playerby Diwali, which is Q3," Micromax Co-Founder Rahul Sharma told PTI. According to IDC figures forQ2 of 2013, Micromax stayed at No 2 spot and crossed the 2 million units mark in shipments. "The vendor is banking on the wave of phablet- driven smartphone adoption and is pushing the Canvas range of devices with bigger screens and compelling imaging capabilities," IDC said. Sharma said IDC data substantiates its success, considering the fact that the maximum growth in Indian smartphone category has happened 5 inch-6.99 inch category which has grown 17 times year on year and the phablet share has steadilyrisen to 30 per cent of the smartphone market in Q2. Micromax has increased itsshare from 18.8 per cent inthe last quarter to 22 per cent. "Micromax has crossed the2 million units shipment mark in Q2 2013 and is poised to be the number one smartphone player in India by Q3. We hope to surpass USD 1 billion in revenues with our innovative product strategy, strong distribution and marketing focused on the Indian youth," Sharma said. "We hope to cross 2.5 million units marks by thirdquarter of this year," he added. Without commentingon the number, Sharma said the company will continue launching new devices in third quarter also. "With the kind of growth we are achieving, our strategy is working in rightdirection and going forward, we continue to stick to it," he added. Sharma said not only in India, the company is among the top three players in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh also and exploring new markets too.

Apple launches iPhone trade-in programme

Apple began letting US iPhone owners trade in their smartphones for credit toward buying new models. The California company's trade-in program kicked off in the wake of unconfirmed reports of a September 10 event at which Apple will unveil new iPhones, with rumors ranging from a gold handset to a low-price version aimed at emerging markets. "iPhones hold great value," Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette said in an email to AFP. "So Apple Retail Stores arelaunching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling." She would not specify how much Apple is paying for old iPhones, but they can fetch $300 or so depending on the model at an array of websites or USconsumer electronics shops that buy handsets. The Wall Street Journal earlier this month reportedthat Apple had asked its Taiwan-based supplier, Hon Hai Precision, to begin shipping two new versionsof the iPhone in September, including a lower-cost model. Speculation has centered around whether Apple will shift its strategy of focusing on premium devices priced at the high-end of the market to include a lower-cost handset appealing to people with tight budgets. A survey by Gartner said Apple's share of the smartphone market worldwide fell to 14.2% in the second quarter, while Samsung's rose to 31.7%. Samsung has found global success with smartphones powered by Google's free Android software, which now dominates the market. As the smartphone market in the United States and other Western countries matures, companies may have better luck encouraging upgrades rather than reaching out tofirst-time buyers, according to Gartner analyst Van Baker. Motives for Apple's trade-in programme likely includekeeping iPhone users loyalto the smartphones as wellas the lucrative iTunes shop for digital music, films, and books. "Keeping people in the foldis what it is all about," Baker said. "The question for me is whether it will be competitive with programs that already exist in the market." Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry sawthe trade-in program as Apple delivering product management instead of product innovation. Analysts and Apple fans have been watching whether chief Tim Cook willlive up to the legacy of company co-founder SteveJobs when it comes to wowing the world with culture-changing devices. "Tim Cook's Apple is very different from Steve Jobs'sApple," Chowdhry said. "This is not the thing customers are looking for."He said Apple lovers are more likely wondering"Where is my iWatch" and"Where is my Apple TV." Cook took over as chief ofthe Cupertino, California company in 2011 as Jobs stepped down to grapple with illness that took his life later that year. Cook is considered an operational mastermind with a relentless work ethic, and is believed to have played a leading rolein the gadget company's turnaround. Cook was Apple's chief operating officer until his elevation to CEO.

Just trace the word you want to write, and Swype will do the rest. And, with the Write & Go app, you can swype a message and send it directly from the notepad by SNS, SMS, Email, Calendar, or Memo.
